VISION

Our vision is to support a healthy artistic community, with a focus on dance and healing arts.  Our Studio Center is home to professionals, students, hobbyists, dancers, healers, beauticians, musicians, and friends.  We aim to broaden awareness and appreciation of dance as an art form, stay on the forefront of the development of that art, and share our experiences with our community.

As dance professionals, we offer a supportive community and excellent service, through quality of performance, instruction, wellness programs, and events.  As a passion, dance is accessible to all shapes, bodies, sizes, genders, and ages, as a path of health, well-being, self-expressions, and personal fulfillment.  We have that passion, and are here to share that with you!

HISTORY

Hip Expressions was founded in 2004 by Johanna ‘Xenobia’ and Karen Sun Ray, as a belly dance collective, dedicated to creating and sustaining a community of dancers in the Tampa Bay area of Florida and beyond.  Our vision was to serve all who love belly dance, from those who enjoy it for fun and fitness, to dedicated professionals.  We began the Monthly Showcase also that year, a place for dancers to share their love of the dance and connect with other artists.  In 2008, our vision for a Studio manifested and we opened as a hub for the community, offering weekly drop in classes, as well as workshops, and community events.  The Boutique expanded with unique designers as well as tried and true belly dance accessories.  In 2011, Johanna took the helm as Director, as the Studio expanded into our new Center nearly four times the size of the previous Studio.  We welcome you as a  participant in the Evolution of Belly Dance in Tampa Bay and Florida!
